“In its anniversary year 2014, the Essl Museum will be dedicating the first retrospective to Adolf Frohner for more than 10 years. The solo exhibition will present an overview of his oeuvre with central works from all periods. Frohner at first attracted attention in the context of Viennese Actionism. Yet Actionism constituted only a short period in his work. As early as at the beginning of the 1960s he was increasingly turning to painting, drawing and sculpture again, whose borders he explored. However, the question posed by the Actionist outcry, what does it mean to be human, continued to determine his future path. With his critical image of the human being and the world, Frohner became one of the most important Austrian post-1945 artists. In the five decades of Frohner’s oeuvre, serial graphics, narrative monumental pictures and experimental object works complement each other.
The exhibition is produced in cooperation with the Forum Frohner in Krems, which will be organising an exhibition on Frohner’s early work in dialogue with his contemporaries at the same time.” (text source: ESSL Museum)
