Green Charter For Film Festivals, a MIOB Initiative

The Green Charter is a cost-free online platform, open to registration and sign-in for all Film Festivals willing to commit to becoming more sustainable. The goal is to raise awareness among teams about pollution generated by their events and to encourage collective efforts to reduce it and improve environmental performance each year. To help festivals in their eco-responsible efforts, a members’ forum is available to exchange tips and advice, and discuss best practices. The collected data will remain private unless individual participants make it public, and the tool is not intended to compare festivals with one another.
Les Arcs Festival, one of the six members of MIOB (Moving Images Borders) played a key role in the platform’s founding, and its General Manager Guillaume Calop presented the project at the Palić Festival in 2022. Supported by Creative Europe’s Meda, the initiative aims to motivate festivals to track their environmental impact by the consumption of transportation, energy, food and waste.
Green Charter’s Principles
- By signing the charter, all members commit to follow a progression path to reduce pollution brought by their activities, take constructive steps to improve the environment, and respect the people involved.
- The participants commit to raise awareness about environmental issues and to promote ideas, solutions and actions that will contribute to following that path
- Festivals commit to record their consumption regarding food, waste, energy and transportation after every edition of their events, according to Film Festivals’ Green Charter calculator
- They also commit to publicly sharing the statistics on their progress generated by the calculator.
- All members commit to write their own charter that fits their needs, ambitions, values and the shape of their events. The charter will address their teams, partners and the public.
