Vienna’s fourth music film festival Poolinale, 25.-30. March 2014
For the fourth time POOLINALE brings music films in the festival format on the big screen. This year, the festival will take place between 25 – 30 March on three locations: at the Top Kino, Porgy & Bess and the Gartenbaukino. The focus of the POOLINALE 2014 is on “Music and Society”. The curated film program examines the importance and potential power of music in dealing with political and social difficulties, on changes in the social environment and individuals.
“Music and Coexistence – a film by Osseily Hanna (UK/IL 2014), who is one of the festival guests – is an exploration into the extent to which music can bring people together in societies. Filmed in multiple locations from San Francisco to Jordan, featuring musicians from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, the documentary is a compelling account of the possibilities and limitations of music in specific parts of Europe and the Middle East.” (text from the official website of Music and Coexistence).
“As the Palaces Burn is a feature-length documentary that originally sought to follow the band and their fans throughout the world, to demonstrate how music ties us together when we can’t find any other common bond. However, during the filming process in 2012, the story abruptly took a dramatic turn, bringing the band into a Kafkaesque nightmare, when lead singer Randy Blythe was arrested on charges of manslaughter, blamed for the death of one of their young fans in the Czech Republic. What followed was a heart-wrenching courtroom drama that left fans, friends, and curious onlookers around the world on the edge of their seats.” (source: As the Palaces Burn official website)
“The Punk singer” is a film about “Kathleen Hanna, who was the lead singer of the punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre. “She rose to national attention as the reluctant but never shy voice of the riot grrrl movement. She became one of the most famously outspoken feminist icons, a cultural lightning rod. Her critics wished she would just shut-up, and her fans hoped she never would. So in 2005, when Hanna stopped shouting, many wondered why. Through 20 years of archival footage* and intimate interviews with Hanna, THE PUNK SINGER takes viewers on a fascinating tour of contemporary music and offers a never-before-seen view into the life of this fearless leader.” (taken from the official “The Punk Singer” website)
The POOLINALE continuously makes efforts to promote Austrian productions. The world premiere of the Austrian musical film “Fuck The Atlantic Ocean ” tells the story of SWEET SWEET MOON, whose filmed acoustic session “They Shoot Music Do not They” (posted online on a Viennese blog) became an unexpected Youtube hit in South America, resulting in a trip through Chile and Argentina. The film will be screened at the official opening of the festival at Porgy & Bess on Thu 27 March, 8 p.m. George Tiller’s silent ‘anti-music film “DMD KIU LIDT” with and about the highly acclaimed band JA PANIK, which recently premiered at the Berlinale, is on of festival’s highlights. Austria’s currently most successful pop musician Parov Stelar was accompanied on tour by a film crew which filmed an entertaining documentary “ALL NIGHT”.
The festival will kick-off on Tuesday evening (starting at 9 p.m) at the Gartenbaukino with a screening of a film series “Strahler 80” and Rob Reiner’s legendary mockumentary “This is Spinal Tap”. The following day, Sixto Rodriguez, the legendary musician who was “re-discovered” due to the big sucess of the Malik Bendjelloul’s documentary “Searching for Sugarman”, will give a concert at the Vienna’s Stadthalle. This event is a nice connection to the POOLINALE which included the mentioned film in its his program.
From Friday to Sunday, the Top Kino will serve as the festival headquarters. In addition to the film program, the audience can look forward to the “Poolinale Talks” whose aim is to deliver a deeper insight into the world of music, film and advertising.
