Salam. Orient Festival 2013 (9th-13th October)
“Music, dance and poetry from Oriental cultures” can be read as the subtitle and programmatic concept of Salam.Orient. The festival – originally founded as “Salam.Islam” – takes place in this form since 2005.
Festival initiator and manager Norbert Ehrlich is trying to present the Oriental cultural heritage to the audience with all its facets and complexity in a mixture of concerts, lectures, discussions and workshops, thus enabling a differentiated, sometimes new, sometimes controversial look at diverse Eastern cultures.
The main question in 2013 is where’s the final border of East and the answers might be found in the list of festival participants.
Among the highlights of this year’s festival is undoubtedly the performance by the Taksim Trio from Turkey on October 17th in the Konzerthaus which intertwines traditional-, classical – and jazz music at the highest instrumental level. No less fascinating is the Chinese Dawanggang formation (18.10. Sargfabrik), whose presence may remind us of the fact that the Orient ends at the Chinese sea. On October 18th the audience can check on what’s new in Iranian music at a concert by Cyminology and Choub in Porgy & Bess.
The trumpet player Ibrahim Maalouf (of Lebanese origin) whose exceptional playing technique made him a star in France, will perform at the Sargfabrik on October 24th accompanied by his ensemble. On the final evening of the festival which takes place on October 31st, the Bollywood Masala Orchestra will “occupy” the stage with its 17 participants who will perform the play “The Spirit of India”.
Mohammed Hassan Alwan is the first guest-writer from Saudi Arabia at the Salam. Orient. He will be reading excerpts from one of his novels (in English!) in Vienna Town library on October 21st. This event came into being in cooperation with VIDC (Society for Austro – Arab relations).
Program for youngest audience includes theatre performances, music and dance workshops.
Ousmane Kane, Professor of Contemporary Islamic Religion and Society at the Harvard Divinity School / USA will open this year’s Salam. Orient with his lecture on the topic “Political Islam in West Africa and Western intervention” at Diplomatic Academy on Wednesday, October 9th.
